Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:

Do you have an active relationship with the local First Nations and Indigenous communities?

We seek education on and follow Indigenous Protocols. We actively build relationships with local indigenous artists. We are at the start of an 18 month project supported by a BCAC impact grant to build our organizations cultural safety plan and expand our capacity to build relationships with First Nations and Indigenous communities.

Do you have a diversity strategy, anti-racism or decolonization statement in place and can it be found on your website?

We have a policy on indigenous iconography in art displayed which is found In our submission guidelines, but otherwise no.

What are your current actions and  future commitments to build or maintain your relationship with the First Nations and Indigenous artists and community?

Through the BCAC access grant we are working through an 18 month project. Phase 1 is Board education and creation of a cultural safety plan. Phase 2 is to build relationships with Indigenous community members. Phase 3 is the creation of intentional programming, including a paid advisory committee of Indigenous artists and community members.

Are you aware of Indigenous Protocols for the visual arts in your community?

Yes

Do you offer land acknowledgements?

Yes, during events and programs

Yes, but we are currently in the process of updating it

Are there specific power dynamics that your organization has identified? And what are your current actions to address them?

We are working to identify more through our current project. Specific ones to our organization are that we are a very small community (2300 people) that is on an island and predominantly retired people of European decent. Flexible submission guidelines and processes, support for travel and transport of art to the island, and designated spaces that are not held to our annual program are ways we are currently working to mitigate barriers
