Artists Working for Artists in British Columbia, Canada

2022 BC Gallery Catalogue

The BC Gallery Catalogue Project intends to provide information to artists and the general public about a spectrum of visual arts organizations, including arts councils, virtual or online artist collectives, artist run centres, public and commercial galleries, presentation spaces, museums, and Indigenous cultural organizations.

We hope to cultivate a better understanding of artist fee payments, cultural safety and accessibility. We aim to provide a resource highlighting diverse opportunities for artists in British Columbia, and to support artists in deciding where to submit their work and detail the different professional paths available to them. The catalogue collects information in four categories:

  1. Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
  2. Submission Processes
  3. CARFAC Fees
  4. Compensation and Supports for Artists

In support of the form process, a preview of the questions can be found here, and when you are ready to fill out and submit your information, you can access it here or send it via email to bc@carfac.ca.

Please arrange 45 minutes to an hour to answer the questions.

Why is participation important?

You may notice that throughout the questions that there is an emphasis on relationship-building within the communities in which organizations operate, and building capacity around cultural safety and accessibility. This is an opportunity for participating organizations to reflect on the important work that they have done and continue to do in these areas. We want to have a clearer understanding of this work, and the characteristics, or the ethos that drives your organization in order to help shape information around future policy development, and what we can do to better support organizations to support artists.

While not all questions may be applicable to your organization, please try your best to provide as many answers as possible. We acknowledge that answers aren’t always simply “yes” or “no”, and that you may want to provide additional written information for context, or links for certain questions. We encourage you to do so when necessary.

How will the information be used?

Launching in fall of 2022, this catalogue will be publicly available on the CARFAC BC website as compilation of information about professional practices of public and private art galleries within British Columbia.

Information provided by organizations that are members of CARFAC BC may also be featured in promotional and outreach activities involving the general public, and or research. Please note: You will not be asked to provide any private information.

What if I need support (technical or otherwise) filling out the survey or have feedback?

We recognize that the survey may not capture all of the information and essence of diverse realities in the arts sector. If you have feedback or specific questions that you feel should be included, please contact us.
CARFAC BC is committed to improve our accessibility. If you have any questions, require assistance, or would prefer to submit your responses via an interview with CARFAC BC staff, please contact us at: bc@carfac.ca.
