Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:

Do you have an active relationship with the local First Nations and Indigenous communities?

Yes, we have an active relationship with the local First Nation and Indigenous communities. We know the local First Nation and invite them to open all our exhibitions with a welcome and blessing. They are compensated for their participation.

We organize at least one exhibition (of 8) a year that focuses on the work of Indigenous artist(s). Artist(s) are compensated following CARFAC guidelines. They are compensated for participation at the Opening and in subsequent outreach programs which are offered to both First Nations only (at the Artist’s request) and non-FN audiences.

We regularly seek advice from members of Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc to ensure the Gallery is a welcoming space. We include (following permission) the use of the local Indigenous language as part of exhibitions and in the Gallery public spaces.

We have one board member who is First Nations. This has been a commitment of our board for the past 10+ years. We have hired an Indigenous Youth Programs Coordinator and Indigenous Art Instructor who develop programs with our Education and Public Programs Director and they deliver these programs throughout the year on a weekly and/or biweekly basis. They are compensated based on the KAG wage range in keeping with other positions at the Gallery.

We have assessed all products sold through the Gallery Store and have ended relationships with suppliers where the artist’s copyright, control, and compensation were unclear or unfair. We respect and follow the recommendations of the Inuit Art Foundation’s Igloo Tag program and the Indigenous Art Code in Australia, honouring artists’ rights and control in all aspects regarding their work. We prioritize relationships with artists from this region, and work with artists to ensure transparency regarding payment and appropriate display.

We extend our gratitude to the CARFAC Indigenous Protocols for the Visual Arts contributors and among them Chris Bose who works with the Gallery.

Do you have a diversity strategy, anti-racism or decolonization statement in place and can it be found on your website?

We have a diversity and anti-racism strategy, created in 2020 with the guidance of Koshiki Tanaka with Cicily Blain Consulting (now Bakau Consulting) which continues to be implemented. It is not posted on our website.

What are your current actions and  future commitments to build or maintain your relationship with the First Nations and Indigenous artists and community?

We will continue as outlined above as well as grow engagement with Indigenous artists and communities. We appreciate that de-centering whiteness and decolonizing the Gallery is a long process, but one we are deeply committed to as an organization.

Are you aware of Indigenous Protocols for the visual arts in your community?

Yes

Do you offer land acknowledgements?

Yes, during events and programs

Yes, on our website

Yes, on printed matter and promotional materials (postcards, brochures, business cards, etc.)

Are there specific power dynamics that your organization has identified? And what are your current actions to address them?
