Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:

Do you have an active relationship with the local First Nations and Indigenous communities?

We have an Indigenous member of the collective (1 of 14 artists), have member representation on a community working group on decolonisation understanding and practices, have formed an Indigenous Engagement committee within the collective, to work toward making our space and our practices safer and more inviting for Indigenous artists and community members, and to educate our members in decolonisation practices and approaches. We have started forming some goals toward a grant proposal for engaging in some shared art and cultural experiences with the local Indigenous community. Have downloaded CARFAC’s Indigenous Protocol Document for reference by group.

Do you have a diversity strategy, anti-racism or decolonization statement in place and can it be found on your website?

Anti-discrimination policy in place as a requirement for membership, please see Metchosin ArtPod Society infomation page on the website: https://metchosinartpod.ca/metchosin-artpod/. Also included as a submission.

What are your current actions and  future commitments to build or maintain your relationship with the First Nations and Indigenous artists and community?

See previous answer re: Indigenous Engagement committee and goals for future grant.

Are you aware of Indigenous Protocols for the visual arts in your community?

The Indigenous member of the collective has extensive experience engaging with local communities and their protocols. Other members have an awareness for and intention to engage in these protocols when approriate. A territory acknowledgement has been an opening component of our events.

Are there specific power dynamics that your organization has identified? And what are your current actions to address them?

We are situated within a small-village, rural setting and the community itself embodies inclusive practices. Though we exist on a shoestring budget and have yet to receive any grants to support our endeavours, we intentionally keep our fees at a very reasonable level and have addressed financial barriers on an individual basic. We are often a venue for emerging artists to engage in their first open call and juried show, and our workshops and drop-in groups include artists of all levels of experience. We adopt CARFAC’s recommended pay for guest jurors and workshop instructors. Please see our Accessibility statement on the website. Here is is for consideration:

We are a volunteer-driven organisation and, as a not-for-profit society, we function on a very slim budget in order to make visual arts opportunities as financially accessible as possible. We collaborate to arrange low-cost artist drop-in groups, workshops and art events and encourage artists to submit their work for our juried shows by keeping our fees reasonable. Additionally, our gallery is open to the public three days a week. There is no entry fee, though we do appreciate donations from visitors who are able to manage a contribution toward our operating costs. Our collective includes a balance of male and female artists with Indigenous and LGBTQ+ representation. We have members with expertise in inclusive practices for people with diverse needs. Our gallery has physically accessible off-road parking, a level entrance, wheelchair ramp and wheelchair accessible washrooms.
