Artists Working for Artists in British Columbia, Canada

Call for Visual Arts Allies!! Volunteers for the CARFAC BC Board are Needed

TL;DR We seek skilled, creative, and passionate Directors!

“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. When you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.”

CARFAC National was established by artists in 1968. CARFAC BC has been in operation since 1990, working on behalf of its membership. A working board of directors governs us. Part-time staff collaborate with them. Together, they manage all operations and provide member services dedicated to professionalizing the visual arts. It also promotes diversity and social justice.

Board members volunteer 8-10 hours monthly. They participate in meetings and attend events live. They also serve on committees addressing artist rights, copyright, and inclusivity. Key skills desired include mentorship, networking, and advocacy. Skills in fundraising and financial management are important. Social media expertise and knowledge of arts legislation are also needed. Technical skills in accessible design, equity-building experience, and a commitment to anti-racism work are essential. Applicants should share a bio and relevant links to apply, committing to CARFAC BC’s mission and values.

As artists, we work in solidarity with each other. We partner with our CARFAC provincial colleagues. Together, we develop guidelines for fees and fair labour practices. We advocate for and preserve all artists’ rights at the federal, provincial, and local levels. We believe in the visual arts as a profession. We value and respect all artists, their art forms, and their diverse voices. We also respect their rights. We firmly commit to enhancing public understanding and awareness of the arts. We see art appreciation as foundational and critical to our communities. Our membership includes visual artists of all mediums and backgrounds. It also includes artists from other disciplines, staff from museums and art galleries, and educational institutions. We welcome other individuals and organizations with a passion for visual art.

We seek proactive members from various backgrounds throughout the province. They should represent the interests of professional visual artists. They will also be a point of contact between CARFAC BC and their local communities.

Board meetings are conducted monthly via Zoom for 8 months and in person 2 times a year. July and August are taken off.

Directors are encouraged to volunteer 8-10 hours monthly, contributing their time and talent to various committees. Directors also attend gallery openings, conferences, and events throughout the province as representatives of CARFAC.

Board Responsibilities:

Board members should:

  • Be prepared to contribute 8-10 volunteer hours per month, depending on committee or executive roles. This ensures each Director may contribute their expertise to further our mission of supporting all visual artists.
  • Attend Board meetings and the Annual General Meeting via Zoom. Read the necessary documents beforehand. Prepare to discuss the issues.
  • Participate in at least two board committees. Committee meetings provide in-depth opportunities to discuss, analyze, and prepare recommendations for board action.
  • Prioritize artist resale rights and copyright protection. We also focus on initiatives to improve accessibility and inclusion to meet the diaspora of our artists’ needs.
  • Directors must be prepared to actively serve as community ambassadors promoting CARFAC’s values. This requires an informed board member committed to social justice, ensuring all visual artists are afforded fair opportunities to thrive.
  • Comply with the requirements of all accrediting bodies.
  • Approve the annual budget.
  • Collaboratively design and implement short and longer-term strategic plans.
  • Review the organization’s progress toward achieving its goals.
  • Welcome and champion the work of our volunteers and community supporters.

Skills We Seek

  • Mentorship for emerging artists.
  • Social and professional networking skills in the arts
  • Lobbying or legal advocacy experience
  • Fundraising and development skills
  • Accounting or financial management
  • Social media skill and professional marketing experience.
  • Knowledge of Legislation that benefits the visual arts profession.
  • Grassroots organizing and advocacy experience
  • Leadership with board-level experience is preferred but not required.
  • Commitment to building relationships with diverse artists in every community
  • Technical skills, including accessible Universal Design and human-centered AI.
  • Understanding of anti-racist ways of working in solidarity with others
